New Baby Basics helps you settle into parenthood with as few hiccups as possible.
My name is Cathryn. I’m a mom with a background in education and experience working with young children. I loved the newborn days and want to help new parents feel calm and confident in those first few weeks. I’m also a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) and can help you chose a car seat and learn how
I’m a mom of two school-aged kids and former teacher who is passionate about helping new parents feel comfortable and confident in the first few weeks after bringing home a new baby. It can be scary and overwhelming to be sent home from the hospital with that little tiny human.
Don’t lose sleep trying to remember all the newborn care information you learned in a prenatal class, had a nurse show you at the hospital, or searched in a panic in the middle of the night. Let me come to you and calmly, gently help you learn what to do with YOUR baby in YOUR space. No pressure. No judgement.
I understand that every child and every family is different so general parenting advice that works for some families might not work for your unique situation. Your baby’s temperament and your parenting goals are important to consider.
I will help you wade through all of the great evidence-based research as well as share time-tested wisdom and parenting tips that align with your unique parenting style, to figure out what works for YOU and YOUR BABY. As a mom of a highly sensitive baby turned spirited kid,I get it. There isn’t a one size fits all solution.
I have extensive experience with young babies and can help you feel confident in those first few weeks at home. I want you to feel confident and calm when caring for your baby. I’m here to go over all those basics that might seem overwhelming right now.
As a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) I participate in community seat checks, continuing education, and public outreach to make sure that all kids are secured correctly in the best seat for their age, developmental level, and the car they will be riding in.
I can help you navigate which car seat to purchase, where you will get the best install in your car, how to install, and what your next seat will need to be. Schedule a free 10 min phone call to discuss your needs and find out how I can help.
Car seat safety is one of the first things parents can learn about before their little one arrives. I can help you install a seat in your car, grandma’s car, an Uber, or a nanny’s car. My goal is to teach you how do it so that you are able to install and reinstall with confidence. New parents have enough to worry about. Knowing their babies are safe in the car goes a long way!
Once you have the car seat figured out, it’s time to go over all the skills you need to make life with a newborn as easy as possible. I am here to help you. Newborn baby care doesn't need to be overwhelming. New parents will learn all about babies and what they need.
Have you forgotten everything the nurses told you in the hospital? Struggling to feel like you know what you are doing? Scared you have forgotten something important? Want someone, not your judge-y mother-in-law, to walk you through all those basic new baby skills? Give me a call or send me an email to set up a quick call to discuss your needs. I am available to come to your house, see your space, and walk you through any baby care tasks you might need support with. I can help you learn to swaddle, burp, bounce, bathe, feed, and soothe your newest family member with confidence. The first few weeks can be overwhelming and I am here to provide nonjudgmental parenting support.

The purpose of New Baby Basics is to help new parents become comfortable and confident caring for their newborns. This includes learning how to install and properly use the car seat, baby care tasks such as diapering, burping, swaddling, and setting up your space to be safe and convenient. I come to you, in your home, to review all the things that were shown to you before having a baby, or in the hospital afterwards. I can provide suggestions for breastfeeding, baby carriers, and how to connect with your newest family member. I can also share tips you may not have heard of before now. The first few weeks can be a blur and I want you to feel confident with that new baby in your arms in your space.
Car seat selection and installation education can happen before or after baby is born. New Baby Basics visits take place in the first couple weeks home. It’s natural for new parents to feel nervous, and I’m here to be that judgment-free hand on your back helping you get comfortable with your new roles.
You can schedule a free 5-10 minute call where we can discuss your individual situation. What car seat do you have? Which car(s) will it be installed in most often? We can discuss any other important information and then we will schedule a time and place to meet. I will walk you through the installation process so you know it’s installed correctly. We will practice buckling your baby in so you know how tight to pull the harness and how to situate a baby. You can also add on an additional car in case you want to check installation in multiple cars. (Two car families, grandparent’s car, of a nanny’s car, etc.) I want you to feel ready to install your car seat and get baby all buckled in properly.
At a New Baby Visit I will come to your home and walk you through some basic newborn care and answer any questions you have about feeding, burping, swaddling, soothing, or car seat safety. For some parents this might be a review of things you covered in a class before baby was born, or it could be all new info. I am here to help you build confidence as a brand new parent. I will come ready to help with specific questions or challenges that we discussed during your phone call before my visit. I am here to give you personalized advice and answer your unique questions. Parenting isn’t one size fits all and neither are my visits!
Nothing! This is meant to be stress free for you. I have seen a sink full of dishes, a mountain of dirty laundry, and people in their pajamas. No need to worry about what you, or your house, looks like.
If you have any specific questions, jot them down so we go over them. You might want to have any baby specific gear (bottles, swaddles, car seat, bathtub) out and ready to look at.
I plan to have up to two adults, besides myself, at the appointments. If you would like to invite more than grandparents, a relative, friend, or nanny, that’s great! There will be an addition fee and I will block off more time for the appointment. More people usually means more questions and I want to make sure everyone gets their questions answered.
Having a baby can be physically and emotionally difficult. I’m here to walk you through the first couple weeks. So many parents feel overwhelmed and scared. You don’t have to feel that way. I can review all the things you need to know in YOUR home, with YOUR baby gear, in a calm and relaxed manner. Baby needs to eat? Great! Feed that little one while we continue chatting. Poopy diaper? No problem. I might even be able to give you some tips and tricks to make it easier. You deserve to feel competent even if your hormones are all out of whack as you haven’t slept or showered in days. Give me a call or shoot me an email and we can schedule a quick, free phone call to discuss how I can help and see if I am the right fit for you.
New Baby Basics will make home visits in Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, Roscoe Village, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, and Old Town. For a small additional fee, we can travel further to you. Virtual visits are also available. Reach out to see what we can do to help!
